What Is
Onyx?

Onyx is formed by the slow deposition of calcium carbonate in caves and springs — the same general process as travertine, but with conditions that produce a much more dense, translucent material with distinct banding. The characteristic bands of color in onyx reflect the changing mineral content of the water during deposition. True onyx is relatively rare and is considered a premium luxury stone.

Onyx is defined by its translucency and its dramatic banded color patterns. When backlit, onyx glows — making it a popular choice for feature walls, bar surfaces, and decorative applications where the effect can be showcased. Colors range from white and honey to deep green, black, and rust. Each slab is genuinely unique — the banding patterns do not repeat.

How Onyx
Performs

Onyx is one of the softest and most delicate natural stones. It scratches easily, etches readily from any acidic contact, and is more fragile than marble or limestone. It is not a practical choice for high-use surfaces like kitchen countertops — its beauty is best preserved in lower-contact applications where it can be showcased. Professional restoration of onyx requires the most controlled and careful technique of any stone we work with.

Our Restoration Approach

Onyx restoration is the most delicate work we perform. The stone's softness and fragility require highly controlled abrasive sequences and careful technique. The results — when done correctly — are extraordinary. The depth and translucency of properly restored onyx is unlike any other natural stone. We assess every onyx job carefully and are honest about what the stone can support before beginning.

Common Questions

Onyx Questions

Onyx is one of the softest and most delicate natural stones — beautiful but high-maintenance. It scratches, etches, and chips more easily than most stones, so it's best for low-use areas, accent pieces, and backlit features rather than hard-working kitchen counters.
Yes, but onyx requires the most careful technique of any stone we work with. Its softness and translucency demand a delicate hand. We restore onyx surfaces using fine progressive abrasives and specialized polishing — it's specialist work.
Onyx is naturally brittle and often has internal fissures. It's frequently reinforced with mesh backing for this reason. Chips and cracks can be repaired with color-matched fill, including translucent fills that match onyx's depth.
Treat onyx gently — stone-safe cleaners only, no acidic products, coasters and trivets always, and keep it sealed. Onyx rewards careful ownership with stunning appearance, especially when backlit.
