What Is
Limestone?

Limestone forms from the accumulation of calcium carbonate — primarily from marine organisms like shells, coral, and skeletal fragments — on the ocean floor over millions of years. The material compacts and cements into rock. Unlike marble, limestone has not been subjected to metamorphic heat and pressure, which is why it is softer and more porous than its metamorphic counterpart.

Limestone has a warm, muted palette — creams, tans, beiges, and soft greys. Its appearance is generally more subtle than marble, with less dramatic veining and more uniform color. It often contains visible fossil impressions and natural texture that gives it an organic, aged character. Finishes range from polished to honed to tumbled.

How Limestone
Performs

Limestone is one of the softer natural stones and requires more careful maintenance than granite or quartzite. It is calcium-based — highly reactive to acids — and more porous than marble, meaning it absorbs liquids more readily. Etching from acidic products is common, as is staining when the sealer has failed. Both conditions respond well to professional restoration.

Our Restoration Approach

Limestone restoration requires a careful approach — its softness means aggressive honing can remove too much material. We use appropriate grits and technique to restore the surface without over-processing. The results are typically excellent — limestone has a beautiful, warm quality when properly restored and sealed.

How to Care for It

Proper care extends the life of your limestone significantly and reduces the frequency of professional restoration.

Common Questions

Limestone Questions

Yes. Limestone is calcium-based like marble, so it etches from acidic contact — lemon, vinegar, wine, and acidic cleaners all damage the surface. Limestone is also generally softer and more porous than marble, making it even more vulnerable to etching and staining.
Limestone is most commonly finished honed (matte) rather than polished, because its structure doesn't take a high gloss the way marble does. We can restore limestone to a clean honed finish and, depending on the specific stone, develop a low sheen. We assess what's achievable for your particular limestone.
Limestone is highly porous, so liquids absorb quickly and can stain before you wipe them up. Proper sealing dramatically reduces this. Unsealed limestone in a kitchen or bathroom will stain — sealing is essential for this stone.
Often yes. We use poulticing to draw stains out of the stone, then hone the surface to restore a uniform finish, then seal to protect against future staining. Deep old stains are more challenging but frequently improvable.
