Chip & Crack
Repair

Color-matched filling and seamless blending of chips, cracks, and edge damage on marble, granite, quartzite, and all natural stone surfaces throughout North Idaho.

Seamless Repair.
Invisible Results.

A chip or crack in natural stone is not a reason to replace it. In the vast majority of cases — from small edge chips on a kitchen countertop to hairline cracks running through a floor tile — professional repair restores the surface to a condition that is difficult or impossible to detect in normal use.

The repair process begins with color matching. We work with stone-compatible fillers and pigments to create a match for your specific stone — accounting for its base color, veining pattern, and finish. This is the most skill-intensive part of the process, and it is what separates professional repair from visible patch jobs.

Once the repair is filled and cured, we blend it into the surrounding surface through honing and polishing so the finish across the repaired area matches the rest of the stone. The result in most cases is a repair that is virtually undetectable.

Chip and crack repair is typically completed as part of a broader restoration job — countertop restoration, floor refinishing — but can also be performed as a standalone service for isolated damage.

How We Do It

Our Repair Process

01 — Evaluate
Damage Assessment
We assess the size, depth, and location of the damage, the stone type and finish, and what is achievable with repair. Some damage is fully correctable to an invisible result. Some — particularly deep structural cracks — may require a different conversation. We give you an honest assessment before we begin.
02 — Match
Color Matching
We mix stone-compatible fillers and tints to match your specific stone — its base color, veining, and surface character. For stones with complex veining like marble or granite, this is the most skill-intensive step. The goal is a match that is invisible in normal viewing conditions, not just one that is close.
Color matching quality determines the final result — we take our time here.
03 — Fill & Cure
Filling & Curing
We fill the chip, crack, or void with the color-matched material, ensuring it is packed correctly for the repair type. The fill is then cured — either through UV exposure or time depending on the material — to a hardness that matches the surrounding stone before finishing work begins.
04 — Blend
Honing & Blending
Once the fill is cured, we hone and polish the repaired area to match the surrounding finish exactly — whether that is a high gloss, honed matte, or brushed texture. This step blends the repair seamlessly into the stone so that the transition between repaired and original material is not detectable.
What We Repair

Types of Damage

We repair a wide range of stone damage across all surface types and locations throughout the home.

Edge Chips
The most common repair we perform. Countertop edges and corners are particularly vulnerable to impact damage. Color-matched filling and edge blending restores the profile so the chip is undetectable. Very common on kitchen island corners and bathroom vanity edges.
Surface Chips
Impact damage to the face of a countertop, floor tile, or wall panel. Filled and blended to match the surrounding surface. The visibility of the repair depends heavily on the complexity of the stone's pattern — we assess and advise before committing to a result.
Hairline Cracks
Fine cracks that run through the stone surface — often caused by structural movement, temperature cycling, or improper installation. Filled with compatible material and blended so the crack line is no longer visible. Does not address the underlying cause of the crack if structural.
Pit & Void Filling
Travertine and other porous stones have natural voids that can be filled as part of a restoration job. Filling improves the surface uniformity and reduces areas where dirt and moisture can accumulate. Part of our standard travertine restoration process.
Floor Tile Cracks
Cracked floor tiles — whether from impact or substrate movement — can be repaired in place without removal. Color-matched fill and surface blending restores the tile's appearance. If the tile has shifted or is loose, we assess whether repair or replacement is the better approach.
Broken Corners
Larger corner breaks on countertops, vanity tops, and hearths — where a section of stone has broken away entirely. These require more material and more blending work but in most cases can be repaired to a highly satisfactory result at a fraction of replacement cost.
When to Call Us

When Repair Is the
Right Answer

The Damage Is Isolated

A single chip or crack on an otherwise sound surface is a repair job, not a replacement. The cost difference is significant — repair is typically a small fraction of what replacement costs — and the result in most cases is virtually undetectable.

You're Embarrassed to Show the Surface

If you find yourself covering a chip with a cutting board or avoiding pointing out a cracked tile to guests, that is a signal. Repair is usually a same-day job and the result eliminates the need to work around the damage.

You're Planning to Sell Your Home

Chipped stone countertops and cracked floors are visible during home inspections and showings. Repair is one of the highest-return pre-sale improvements available for homes with natural stone — the cost is minimal relative to the impact on perceived value.

The Damage Is Getting Worse

Small chips and hairline cracks tend to grow over time — particularly on floors where traffic introduces stress, or on countertops where the damaged edge catches and extends. Addressing damage early keeps the repair straightforward and the result better.

Questions

Frequently Asked

In most cases, no — not in normal viewing conditions. The visibility of a repair depends on the complexity of the stone's pattern, the size of the damage, and its location. Stones with heavy movement and complex veining are harder to match perfectly than plainer stones. We assess each repair before committing and give you an honest expectation. Our goal is always an invisible result — and in the majority of jobs, that is what we achieve.
Most chips and surface cracks can be repaired to a high standard. Deep structural cracks — where the stone has fractured through its full depth due to substrate movement — are more complex. We can fill and blend them cosmetically, but if the underlying cause is not addressed, the crack may reopen. We discuss this transparently during assessment. Chips of any size can virtually always be repaired successfully.
A single chip repair typically takes 1 to 2 hours including curing time. Multiple repairs or larger damage takes longer. When repair is part of a broader restoration — countertop honing, floor refinishing — it is done as part of that job. We'll give you an accurate time estimate during assessment.
For isolated damage on otherwise sound stone — yes, almost always. The cost and disruption of replacing a countertop or floor tile is significant, and a well-executed repair achieves a comparable visual result. If the stone has widespread damage, multiple cracks, or structural issues, replacement may be the more practical long-term solution. We'll give you an honest assessment and let you decide.
Because every stone surface is different, pricing depends on the stone type, current condition, access, square footage, and the level of restoration needed. In many cases, professional restoration is significantly less than replacement — often roughly one-third to one-half the cost of replacing the stone, depending on the project. We provide an honest written quote after the free in-home assessment so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

Common Questions

Questions About
Chip & Crack Repair

In most cases yes. We use professional color-matched epoxy fillers that we tint specifically to match your stone — including the color variation, the depth of color, and the surface finish. When done correctly, the repair is virtually undetectable. We can show you finished examples before starting if you'd like to see what to expect.
We repair chips and cracks in marble, granite, quartzite, quartz, travertine, limestone, soapstone, slate, dolomite, and most engineered stones. The only stones we sometimes can't repair perfectly are ones with very dramatic veining patterns that are nearly impossible to match exactly — in those cases we get extremely close but a careful eye may still see the repair on close inspection. We're always honest about what's achievable before starting.
Most chip repairs take 30 to 90 minutes per chip including curing time. You can use the countertop or floor again within a few hours of completion. The repair is fully cured and ready for normal use the next day.
Properly done color-matched repairs last indefinitely. The epoxies we use are designed for permanent stone repair. We've done repairs that are still invisible and intact a decade later. Inexpensive DIY chip repair kits often fail because they use weaker materials and don't include proper surface prep — that's why people sometimes see repaired chips reappear over time.
Most cracks can be filled and stabilized so they look professional and don't continue to spread. Hairline cracks fill cleanly and become invisible. Larger cracks can be stabilized and color-matched, though they may remain faintly visible on close inspection. Replacement is rarely necessary unless the slab is structurally compromised. We evaluate every crack honestly during the free in-home assessment.
These stones take more skill but they're absolutely doable. We carry a wide range of epoxies, pigments, and inclusion materials to match even unusual stones. The work is slower because the matching has to be exact, but the results are excellent. Onyx repairs in particular benefit from the translucent properties we can mix into the fill to match the stone's depth.
