Headstone
Restoration

Careful, respectful cleaning, polishing, and sealing of natural stone memorials throughout North Idaho cemeteries and private grounds.

Preserve What
Matters Most

Headstones and memorial markers are among the most enduring tributes we can leave for those we have lost. Natural stone is chosen for its permanence — but even stone is affected by time, weather, biological growth, and environmental conditions. A memorial that has become difficult to read or has lost its original character deserves the same skilled care as any other stone surface.

We approach every headstone restoration with the care and seriousness the work demands. Our process is non-damaging, appropriate to the stone type, and mindful of the context in which we are working. We do not use aggressive chemistry or mechanical methods that could cause irreversible harm to a memorial.

The results are often significant — biological growth removed, lettering clarified, stone color restored, and a protective seal applied to slow future deterioration. Many families are moved by the transformation of a memorial that had become difficult to recognize.

Our Approach

Care & Respect

Headstone restoration is different from every other stone service we provide. We are working with objects of deep personal significance in settings that require discretion, quiet, and respect. We take this seriously.

We coordinate with cemetery staff when required, work without disrupting other visitors, and treat every memorial as if it belonged to someone we knew. The work is done carefully, without rushing, and with full attention to preserving the integrity of the stone and its inscription.

We do not use methods that could cause harm to the stone or compromise the inscription. If we assess that a particular approach carries risk, we tell you — and recommend the most conservative path that still achieves a meaningful result.

How We Do It

Our Restoration Process

01 — Evaluate
Memorial Assessment
We assess the stone type, its condition, the extent of biological growth and weathering, and the state of the inscription. We determine the safest and most effective approach for this specific stone — not a generic process applied to every memorial.
02 — Clean
Careful Deep Cleaning
We use D/2 Biological Solution and other stone-safe cleaners — the professional standard for memorial cleaning — to safely remove biological growth including lichen, moss, algae, and mold from the stone surface. We apply carefully and rinse thoroughly. No pressure washing, no bleach.
D/2 is the approved cleaning solution for historic and memorial stone restoration.
03 — Polish
Surface Restoration
Where appropriate and safe for the stone type, we restore the surface finish — removing weathering, brightening the stone's natural color, and clarifying the inscription. This step is done conservatively and only where the stone condition supports it without risk of damage.
We err toward conservation over aggressive restoration on all memorial work.
04 — Seal
Protective Sealing
We apply a penetrating sealer appropriate for outdoor stone to slow future biological growth and weather penetration. This extends the time before the next cleaning is needed and slows the gradual deterioration that affects all outdoor stone in North Idaho's climate.
Stone Types

Materials We Work With

Memorial stones are made from a range of natural stone materials, each requiring a specific approach to cleaning and restoration.

Granite
Silica-based · Hard
The most common modern headstone material. Durable and resistant to weathering. Biological growth sits on the surface and responds well to professional cleaning and re-sealing. The most straightforward restoration.
Marble
Calcium-based · Soft
Common in older memorials. More susceptible to acid rain weathering and biological growth. Requires careful, conservative cleaning chemistry. Polishing can restore clarity where appropriate.
Limestone
Calcium-based · Soft
Used in older and historic memorials. Particularly susceptible to biological growth and acid weathering. Requires the most conservative approach — gentle cleaning and minimal intervention to avoid damage to fragile surfaces.
Sandstone
Silica-based · Soft
Found in older memorials — sometimes over 100 years old. Extremely fragile. We assess carefully and use only the most conservative cleaning approaches. Preservation rather than restoration is the appropriate goal.
Questions

Frequently Asked

Requirements vary by cemetery. Most cemeteries allow family members to have memorials professionally cleaned, but some require prior notification or approval. We are familiar with the process and can help guide you through what is required for the specific cemetery. We always coordinate with cemetery staff as needed.
Yes. We use D/2 Biological Solution — the professional standard for memorial and historic stone cleaning, recommended by preservation organizations including the Association for Gravestone Studies. It is pH-neutral, biodegradable, and safe for all stone types. We do not use bleach, pressure washing, or abrasive methods that can cause irreversible damage to stone and inscriptions.
Most single headstone restorations take between 1 and 3 hours on-site. Biological growth removal with D/2 often continues to work over several weeks after application — the full result is typically visible 30 to 60 days after treatment as the remaining growth continues to lift. We'll explain this timeline during assessment so expectations are accurate.
Sometimes — with careful assessment. Very old sandstone and limestone memorials from the 19th and early 20th century can be extremely fragile. We assess honestly and recommend only what the stone can safely support. For fragile historic memorials, our goal shifts from restoration to conservation — the most gentle cleaning possible that improves readability without risking damage to an irreplaceable stone.
In North Idaho's climate, most granite memorials benefit from professional cleaning every 3 to 5 years. Marble and limestone may need attention more frequently due to their greater susceptibility to biological growth and weathering. Sealing after each cleaning significantly extends the interval before the next service is needed.
Because every stone surface is different, pricing depends on the stone type, current condition, access, square footage, and the level of restoration needed. In many cases, professional restoration is significantly less than replacement — often roughly one-third to one-half the cost of replacing the stone, depending on the project. We provide an honest written quote after the free in-home assessment so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

Common Questions

Questions About
Headstone Restoration

Yes — granite and marble headstones respond beautifully to professional restoration. We remove decades of weather staining, lichen, algae, and biological growth using methods approved by cemetery preservation standards. The engraving regains clarity and the stone color returns. Restoration is gentle and preserves the memorial completely.
No. We use only stone-safe cleaning methods specifically approved for memorial restoration. No pressure washing, no harsh chemicals, no methods that erode lettering or polish. The techniques we use are the same ones used by cemetery preservation professionals. Engravings come out clearer because decades of buildup are removed from inside the lettering.
Most cemeteries allow professional restoration without special permission, but it's always worth a quick call to the cemetery office to confirm their policy. Some larger or historic cemeteries have specific approved-vendor lists. We can help you navigate the conversation and provide any documentation the cemetery requests.
A single headstone restoration usually takes 1 to 2 hours on site. We work outdoors year-round but prefer dry weather and temperatures above freezing for the best results. We can schedule work in spring, summer, and early fall, and we keep a waiting list for restoration work over the winter months.
Most memorial stones in the Coeur d'Alene area benefit from professional cleaning every 5 to 10 years depending on location, exposure, and the type of stone. Lighter cleaning more frequently is also an option. We can recommend a schedule based on the specific conditions where the headstone is located.
Many can be — depending on the type and extent of damage. We do color-matched chip and crack repair on memorial stones. For broken or fallen monuments we can often re-bond pieces using cemetery-approved structural adhesives. We assess every memorial individually and tell you honestly what can and can't be achieved.
