Exterior & Entryway
Stone Restoration

Professional cleaning, restoration, and sealing of exterior stone cladding, entryway pavers, steps, and decorative stone on North Idaho commercial properties.

First Impressions Begin
at the Entry.

The exterior stone of a commercial property is the first thing clients, guests, and visitors encounter. Entryway pavers, stone cladding, steps, and decorative stone that look maintained signal professionalism and quality. Stone that looks weathered, stained, or neglected signals the opposite — before anyone walks through the door.

North Idaho's climate is demanding on exterior stone. Freeze-thaw cycles, winter road salt and deicers, spring moisture, and biological growth all accelerate the deterioration of outdoor stone surfaces. Professional cleaning, restoration, and sealing address existing damage and significantly slow future deterioration.

We use exterior-grade chemistry and sealers formulated for outdoor conditions — products that perform across North Idaho's temperature range and weather patterns. Interior stone products are not appropriate for exterior applications, and we do not use them.

Exterior stone restoration is typically scheduled in spring — after winter damage can be assessed — or fall before the freeze season. We offer seasonal maintenance programs for commercial properties that want their exterior stone maintained on a consistent schedule.

How We Do It

Our Process

01 — Evaluate
Exterior Assessment
We assess the stone type, the nature and extent of weathering, biological growth, efflorescence, salt damage, and any physical deterioration from freeze-thaw cycles. Exterior stone assessment requires accounting for North Idaho's specific climate conditions.
02 — Clean
Exterior Deep Cleaning
We remove biological growth, efflorescence, road salt residue, environmental staining, and surface contamination using exterior-grade, stone-safe chemistry. Pressure washing alone is not appropriate for natural stone — our process uses controlled chemistry and technique.
03 — Restore
Surface Restoration
Where the stone surface has been physically damaged — etched by deicers, worn by foot traffic, or weathered over time — we restore through appropriate honing and treatment. Exterior restoration is more conservative than interior work, accounting for the ongoing exposure the stone will continue to face.
04 — Seal
Exterior-Grade Sealing
We apply a penetrating sealer formulated for outdoor stone in North Idaho's climate — protecting against moisture penetration, biological growth, deicer damage, and freeze-thaw deterioration. Exterior sealing is one of the highest-return maintenance investments for commercial stone.
Stone Types

Materials We Work With

We work with all natural stone types present in North Idaho commercial properties.

Granite
Silica-based · Hard
The most durable exterior stone for North Idaho conditions. Resists freeze-thaw damage and chemical exposure from deicers. Primarily requires periodic cleaning and re-sealing.
Limestone
Calcium-based · Soft
Used in exterior cladding and decorative applications. More susceptible to freeze-thaw and acid rain damage. Requires careful cleaning chemistry and regular sealing.
Bluestone
Silica-based · Medium
Common for commercial entryway pavers and steps. Naturally slip-resistant. Requires cleaning and sealing to maintain appearance and resist staining.
Slate
Silica-based · Medium
Used in exterior cladding and paving. Its natural cleft texture provides traction. Deep cleaning and exterior-grade sealing maintain its appearance.
Travertine
Calcium-based · Soft–Med
Used in warmer-climate-inspired exterior designs. In North Idaho's climate, requires careful sealing and more frequent maintenance than silica-based stones.

Signs Your Stone Needs
Attention

Biological Growth on Stone

Green or black growth on exterior stone is algae, moss, lichen, or mold. In North Idaho's climate, biological growth is accelerated on north-facing and shaded surfaces. Professional biological treatment removes existing growth and sealing slows recurrence.

White Efflorescence on Stone or Grout

White, chalky deposits on exterior stone or grout are efflorescence — mineral salts migrating from within the stone or substrate to the surface. Professional treatment removes efflorescence and addressing the moisture source prevents recurrence.

Salt and Deicer Damage

Winter road salt and deicers are extremely aggressive on natural stone. They accelerate surface deterioration, staining, and can physically damage softer stones through repeated freeze-thaw cycling. Professional cleaning removes salt residue and sealing reduces future penetration.

Weathered or Faded Appearance

Exterior stone that has lost its depth and looks washed out has typically lost its sealer and accumulated surface contamination. Cleaning and re-sealing typically restores significant depth and color without full restoration.

Grout or Joint Failure

Grout and mortar joints in exterior stone applications are exposed to the same freeze-thaw cycles as the stone itself. Failing joints allow water behind the stone, leading to substrate damage and stone movement. Regular inspection catches this before it becomes structural.

Pre-Season Preparation

Commercial properties benefit from a professional pre-season treatment — removing winter damage in spring and applying fresh sealer before the active use season begins. This is the most cost-effective approach to exterior stone maintenance.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Spring is ideal — after winter damage can be fully assessed and before the busy season. Fall is also appropriate for applying fresh sealer before winter. We avoid restoration work in temperatures below freezing, as neither cleaning chemistry nor sealers perform correctly in cold conditions.
In most cases, yes. Salt and deicer residue can be professionally removed and surface damage from chemical exposure can be addressed through restoration. Physical pitting from freeze-thaw damage on very soft stones may have limitations — we assess and communicate honestly.
Yes — pavers, steps, retaining walls, exterior cladding, and all exterior decorative stone. We assess and treat the full exterior stone scope of your property.
Most commercial exterior stone benefits from professional cleaning and re-sealing every 1 to 2 years depending on the stone type, exposure, and traffic. North Idaho's climate makes regular exterior maintenance more important than in milder regions.
Because every stone surface is different, pricing depends on the stone type, current condition, access, square footage, and the level of restoration needed. In many cases, professional restoration is significantly less than replacement — often roughly one-third to one-half the cost of replacing the stone, depending on the project. We provide an honest written quote after the free in-home assessment so you know exactly what to expect before any work begins.

Common Questions

Questions About
Commercial Exterior

Natural stone walkways, pavers, building cladding, columns, exterior stairs, landscape stone, and outdoor entry features. Limestone, travertine, granite, sandstone, slate, and bluestone are all common in commercial exterior applications.
Properly sealed exterior stone resists weather damage well — but North Idaho freeze-thaw cycles, UV exposure, and precipitation eventually break down any sealer. We recommend re-sealing exterior stone every 2 to 3 years depending on exposure. Annual inspection and light maintenance is much less expensive than full restoration.
Yes. Years of mineral staining, organic staining from leaves and landscaping, oil drips, and surface weathering all respond to professional restoration. We restore exterior stone for properties throughout North Idaho — residential entries, commercial walkways, hotel and resort properties.
