What Is
Dolomite?

Dolomite forms when limestone is altered by magnesium-rich groundwater — the calcium in the limestone is partially replaced by magnesium, creating the mineral dolomite. The resulting rock is similar to limestone in many ways but slightly harder and less reactive to acids — though still significantly reactive compared to silica-based stones. It occupies a middle ground between limestone and quartzite in terms of hardness and acid resistance.

Dolomite is frequently mistaken for marble — it can have beautiful white and grey tones with subtle veining that resembles Carrara marble. It is often marketed under trade names that sound like marble varieties. The visual similarity is strong enough that the distinction is important: if you think you have marble but actually have dolomite, the care approach is the same — but the expectations should be calibrated accordingly.

How Dolomite
Performs

Dolomite is slightly harder than marble and slightly more acid-resistant — but it still etches from common household acids. Wine, citrus, vinegar, and many cleaning products will leave dull marks on dolomite surfaces. Homeowners who purchase dolomite expecting marble-like appearance with granite-like durability are often disappointed — dolomite is beautiful but requires the same careful acid-free care as marble.

Our Restoration Approach

Dolomite restoration follows the same process as marble — deep cleaning, honing to remove etching and scratches, polishing to restore the finish, and sealing. It responds well to the process and can be brought back to excellent condition. If you have been told you have marble but are seeing etching, there is a chance you have dolomite — we can confirm during assessment.

Common Questions

Dolomite Questions

Dolomite is its own stone — a carbonate rock that sits between marble and true quartzite in hardness. It's harder and more etch-resistant than marble but not as bulletproof as quartzite. Many stones sold as quartzite are actually dolomite, which is why identification matters for correct care.
Dolomite is more resistant to etching than marble but can still etch from strong or prolonged acid contact. It's a good middle-ground stone — more forgiving than marble, more affordable than top-grade quartzite. Use stone-safe cleaners to be safe.
Yes. Dolomite responds well to professional honing and polishing. Its moderate hardness makes restoration straightforward, and the results hold up well in kitchens and bathrooms.
Seal periodically, use pH-neutral cleaners, and wipe up acidic spills reasonably promptly. Dolomite is more forgiving than marble but benefits from the same basic care habits.
