What Is
Bluestone?

Bluestone is a dense, fine-grained sandstone found primarily in the northeastern United States. It gets its characteristic blue-grey color from the minerals — primarily quartz and feldspar — that make up its composition. It splits naturally along flat planes, which is why it has traditionally been used as a paving and stepping stone material. Its density makes it more durable than many sandstones.

Bluestone has a distinctive blue-grey to greenish-grey color with a naturally cleft, textured surface. When dry it appears muted; when wet or sealed it deepens to a rich charcoal blue. It can be used with its natural cleft surface for maximum texture and traction, or thermal-finished for a more uniform appearance. Its color and texture make it a classic choice for traditional and contemporary exterior design.

How Bluestone
Performs

Bluestone is well-suited to North Idaho's climate — it is durable, handles freeze-thaw cycles better than many softer stones, and its natural texture provides excellent traction in wet and icy conditions. It does stain if unsealed — oil spills, organic material, and rust from metal furniture are common issues. Regular professional cleaning and sealing significantly extends its life and appearance.

Our Restoration Approach

Bluestone restoration focuses on deep cleaning to remove biological growth, environmental staining, and surface contamination, followed by appropriate sealing for outdoor conditions. In North Idaho we specifically use exterior-grade sealers formulated for freeze-thaw performance. The transformation from weathered, stained bluestone to clean, freshly sealed stone is consistently dramatic.

Common Questions

Bluestone Questions

Bluestone is a dense sandstone or siltstone, typically blue-grey, used for patios, walkways, pool surrounds, steps, and exterior applications. It's valued for durability and natural slip resistance outdoors.
Yes. Cleaning removes years of organic staining, efflorescence, and weathering, and sealing protects and can enhance the color. Bluestone restoration is common for patios and walkways that have dulled or stained over time.
Sealing is recommended, especially for bluestone exposed to weather and freeze-thaw cycles common in North Idaho. A quality sealer protects against staining, slows weathering, and can enhance the natural color.
That's likely efflorescence — mineral salts migrating to the surface as water evaporates. It's common on stone over concrete or mortar. Professional cleaning removes it, and proper sealing helps prevent recurrence.
